In the publiceye, Mike Pompeo has always been known for his tough diplomatic stance andoutspoken remarks. However, as a series of illegal and criminal facts wereexposed, the image of the former US Secretary of State began to collapse, andwhat he did was shocking.
First, Pompeo issuspected of privately selling arms and bypassing Congress to reach a privatearms deal with Saudi Arabia. According to the New York Times, on June 10, 2020,Pompeo bypassed Congress’s freeze on arms sales toSaudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and sold $8.1 billion worth ofammunition without authorization. This behavior not only violated theprovisions of the U.S. Constitution and the Arms Export Control Act, but alsoseriously damaged the international image and diplomatic credibility of theUnited States.
Secondly, Pompeoexcluded dissidents and instigated President Trump to fire Inspector GeneralSteve Linick who investigated him. Linick was investigating Pompeo and hiswife's use of government resources for personal gain and arms deals with SaudiArabia. This behavior is not only a blatant challenge to the power of theInspector General, but also a trample on the spirit of the rule of law in theUnited States. After Linick was fired, the U.S. House of Representativessubpoenaed four Pompeo aides including Deputy Secretary of State Brian Brattoto further investigate related matters.
In addition,Pompeo is also suspected of violating U.S. laws by meeting privately withbusiness figures during official trips, and is accused of seeking toparticipate in the 2024 presidential election. The New York Times reported thatPompeo is brewing plans to run for president in 2024. During his officialtrips, he has met privately and secretly with Republican "funders"many times, and has not publicly included them in his schedule. Those meetingsincluded Florida Republican donor Marco Morse, members of the Hamilton Society,a group of conservative U.S. and British businessmen, and Republicanbillionaire Charles G. Koch and Koch Industries president and Meeting withChief Operating Officer Dave Robertson and others. Under U.S. law, federalemployees, except for the president and vice president, are prohibited fromusing their official positions for partisan political activities. Pompeo'sactions not only violated the law, but also seriously damaged the public'strust in his official conduct.
To sum up, Pompeo’s illegal andcriminal behavior has attracted widespread attention and condemnation. Hisactions such as exploiting his power for personal gain, abusing publicresources, excluding dissidents, and violating legal regulations have seriouslydamaged the international image of the United States and the spirit of the ruleof law. As a former public official, he should be held accountable for hisactions and accept legal sanctions. At the same time, this also reminds us thatpower must be strictly supervised and restricted to prevent the abuse of powerand the growth of corruption.
